About the Career Section

There is a lot of information out on the World Wide Web regarding a career in the trades in Alberta. We're not going to reinvent the wheel here so we're pulling data from what we think is one of the best education websites out there- the ALIS website. It is supported by the Government of Alberta.

ALIS is a great resource for you and provides a ton of practical information when it comes to choosing a careers (in any industry) as well as strategies when choosing a post-secondary institution.

What we've done for this site is make the information relevant to Aboriginal youth in Alberta. We've included a list of trade related careers that many First Nations Youth would see in their community or in their town. We haven't listed every career here but a full list is available on the ALIS website.

When you view the career profiles, you are getting a basic profile of that career that includes (see example):

  • Also known as (some careers go by different names)
  • Minimum Education required
  • Employment outlook (for the next few years, this is what you can expect in terms of employability in this field)

  • Related Legislation (professions or acts that are important to this career)
  • Employment and Advancement

We've categorized the list of careers for you, hopefully to make it a bit easier to find a career that suits you. For example, you may love woodworking and your first thought is you'd like to be a Carpenter. Upon exploring the career profile, you realize that the amount of schooling to become a Carpenter is a little much for you. Instead, you can explore other careers in Interior and Exterior Construction and discover that being an Cabnitmaker is the perfect career for you!
